Embracing 2016

It would foolish for me to call 2015 anything but a very good year.

There were adventures had, and journeys taken. There were challenges faced, and dilemmas solved. There were projects started, and completed. There were new friends made, and good friends kept. Of course, as with any year, with the highs came the lows. The failures. The losses. The sorrow. The pain.

At the end of the year, the things that matter are where they should be. My family is healthy. My children are happy. My marriage is good. My bank account is full. My clients are amazing. And my “village” continues to grow.

But 2015 was also a year of transition. With my retirement from my podcast of nearly 10 years, I felt untethered. As if a line had broken and the connecting sail was snapping in the wind.

My lack of purpose was reflected in the original name of this blog “What’s Next . . . I’m not sure where I’m going with this either.”

How “meh” is that?

I retired from Manic Mommies gratefully and don’t for a second regret the choice. It was a chapter of my life that I will forever look back on with wonder and gratitude, but it was time for that chapter the close. It did, however, take me a little time to realize that I had lost a piece of myself when I quit the podcast and blog.

I had lost that piece of my voice that wants to speak about things that aren’t work, and aren’t my husband’s work. I had lost that platform that let me talk about things that I was passionate about, but that didn’t “fit” anywhere else because the topics are too personal, too political, too parental.

With the year coming to a close, I’m grabbing hold of that flapping sail, locking down that stray line and reclaiming my voice, starting with renaming this blog – Embracing Extraordinary.

My goal for the coming year is to “Do Epic Shit.” And through that, to embrace the extraordinary experiences that come when you take on new challenges, new adventures, new dragons to slay. (More on those to come).

Through this blog, as with Manic Mommies, I will be sharing my personal journey, and opinions, as a parent, a wife, a friend, a business owner, an athlete, a teammate and a woman. And hopefully inspiring others to embrace their own extraordinary.

I’m looking forward to “what’s next.”

  1. Very excited to see you getting back in the “game” and embracing a chapter. BUT, if you ever feel the need to have your literal voice heard again, I’ll volunteer as your new podcast co-host! 🙂

  3. I’m looking forward to reading too. Love the theme for 2016. Also thought of you as we drove west through New York, back home to Colorado. The day after Christmas we left my in-laws’ house in Plattsburgh, NY and headed west toward home. Later that evening we passed a couple of cars with Massachusetts plates on the Thruway, just before the Syracuse exits and I’d wondered why the Massachusetts cars seemed to be going in the wrong direction. Then I remembered that I “know” someone who did in fact visit NY after Christmas and couldn’t help but wonder. And then we had a long conversation about the oddities of feeling like you know someone via a podcast. (Mind you, there are 2000 miles between Plattsburgh, NY and Denver, so we had plenty of time for those conversations and more. I’m also happy to report that both children preferred the road trip to flying, and that our dog was also a great traveler.)

Can’t wait to hear all about your adventures!

    1. That is too funny! Both the MA people going the wrong way and the feeling you “know” someone from a podcast (I feel like that about some of the shows I listen to also!)
